When You’re 20 Weeks Pregnant

20 Weeks PregnantSeveral months after finding out that a new member of your family will arrive soon; it’s nice to know how developed your baby has become at 20 weeks.

How Big Is Your Baby at 20 Weeks?

Your baby at 20 weeks is already 6 1/2 inches long, from his head down to his bottom. Meanwhile, he is 10 inches long from head to heal. His length is similar to that of a small banana and he now weighs 10 1/2 ounces.

His Developing Digestive System

At 20 weeks, your baby has finally learned how to swallow. This is a milestone that will benefit his digestive system. His body is also generating meconium now. It’s a sticky substance which is a product of the processes taking place on the digestive system. This substance comes in color black and is commonly released by the baby’s body through his first bowel movement. There are babies who discharge their meconium in the womb or during the course of the delivery.

Dealing With 20 Weeks Pregnant Symptoms

Consume more iron

Pregnancy week 20 signifies that you are already in the middle of your pregnancy.  Your uterus has already reached your belly button level at this point. With your 20 weeks pregnant bump, you have gained more or less 20 pounds. Your weight will continue to grow in the weeks to come. As your baby gets bigger, it is important that you consume more iron from the right food. Iron is the mineral needed by your body to produce hemoglobin.

Pregnancy at 20 weeks marks your body’s need to expand its blood volume. This is necessary for your baby and placenta. With proper intake of iron, your body will not have a hard time putting up with blood production. Pregnant women should include red meat on their meals. You should also eat chicken, soy-based products, spinach, raisins and legumes since these are great sources of iron.

Have a restful sleep

As your 20 weeks pregnant belly grows bigger, you will notice that getting a restful sleep becomes more difficult. Discomforts in your body continue to arise making it harder for you to find the right sleeping position.

If you snore

At 20 weeks, there are pregnant women who complain about snoring. Your spouse might be surprised to hear you snoring for the first time but this is all because of the increased estrogen in your body. Your partner should not be worried because if you are not really a snorer, you will eventually stop producing this annoying noise while asleep once your baby is born.

To somehow stop yourself from snoring, sleep on your side or slightly elevate your head.

If you are experiencing heartburn and indigestion

Heartburn may also make lying down quite a challenging task. Indigestion also brings about difficulty in sleeping. In order to prevent heartburn and indigestion, be aware of foods that cause them. Take time to have the meal you consumed digested before you go to bed. Make it a habit to eat at least 3 hours before going to bed. When you sleep, try to put some pillows under your upper body to be in a reclined position.

If leg cramps wake you up

Although there has been no scientific explanation at this point as to why pregnant women experience leg cramps frequently, some believe it is caused by the extra weight expectant moms have to carry. Since there is no known way to prevent this from happening, all you can do is ease the cramp by means of straightening your leg. Move your toes and carefully walk around for a short while.

If you get sweaty in the middle of the night

Pregnant women tend to feel warmer because of hormonal and weight changes. Metabolism also contributes to this circumstance. It is advised to keep your bedroom cool so you will feel comfortable. Choose breathable sleepwear but make sure you have a ready bathrobe which you can easily grab when you have to go to the bathroom.

If going to sleep becomes difficult for no reason…

Sleeping problems are common to pregnant women. At times, you will find yourself awake in the middle of the night even if it has been an exhausting day. To better the quality of your sleep, you may try some exercises that promote relaxation like yoga, breathing and meditation. Try to avoid any beverage with caffeine in it. Take a warm bath before you toto bed and indulge in its soothing effect.
