The Ectoderm, Mesoderm and Endoderm

The ectoderm, where the development of your baby spinal cord, nerves, brain and backbone will take place, is beginning to grow. This layer is also where the skin, hair nails, tooth enamel and mammary and sweat glands will sprout. The middle layer, known as the mesoderm, is also showing signs of development. In this layer, your baby heart and circulatory system will form. At 5 weeks, his heart has divided into chambers and it is already beating and pumping blood. Meanwhile, the endoderm or the third layer is also getting ready for more changes in the days to come. The endoderm is where the intestines, urinary system, thyroid, lungs, liver and pancreas will grow.

5 Weeks Pregnant Symptoms

If you decide on taking a pregnancy test at this stage, it will show that your HCG levels are evidently high to affirm your pregnancy.

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) is produced in the course of pregnancy. It comprised of cells in the placenta which takes care of the egg upon fertization. It remains in the placenta until it gets attached to the uterine wall.

Morning Sickness

Although this symptom is called morning sickness, it does not necessarily mean it only happens in the morning. Morning sickness can hit you anytime of the day. In most cases, morning sickness is experienced during the 6th week, but there is a great chance that 5 weeks pregnant women stumble upon this symptom.

In order to cope up with morning sickness better, you should make it a habit to eat several small meals throughout the day. In an event you cannot keep any food down, you should discuss this matter immediately to your doctor. Experiencing morning sickness which is more difficult than normal can lead to hyperemesis gravidarum which requires due attention from your health care provider.

Frequent Urination

Your uterus is expanding and there is a possibility that it can press against your bladder. As a result, you spend more time in your toilet. Apart from it being a disturbing symptom, frequent urination is not likely to cause harm to you and your child. Apart from the pressure against the bladder, frequent urination can also be due to hormonal changes or Urinary Tract Infection.

Dealing with Frequent Urination

To deal with this pregnancy symptom, you must make it a habit to lean forward when urinating. Refrain from drinking coffee, tea or any alcoholic beverages as these are dieuretic in nature. Avoid drinking excess fluids before you go to bed. Keep in mind that you need at least 8 glasses of water but have more of it during the day. Performing Kegel exercises can also help ease the discomfort of frequent urination.


Due to increased levels of progesterone, you might feel a little sleepy most of the time. Some expectant moms only go through it during the first trimester while the others have to endure it throughout their pregnancy. You should not ignore when your body tells you it is tired. Get more sleep and more food. It will also help if you include exercise on your daily routine. Know which exercises are safe to perform with your 5 weeks pregnant belly. It will not only ward off fatigue, proper exercise will also make your sleep a lot better.
